7.5 Miles 2006-05-19 |
I played hooky from work today to go kiteboarding. The wind was a bit lighter than I would have hoped. Ever the optimist (when it comes to wind) I decided to call the boss and tell him I wouldn't be in. After I dropped BBCK off at school, I returned home to grab my gear. Once the truck was loaded with everything I'd need for a day at the bay - Including some lunch - I made my way to the beach.
I set up right away, but the wind was doing some strange shifing and gusting a bit, so I sat for a few minutes to let it settle in. There was a light sprinkle, but it ended right about the time that the wind decided what it was going to do. It finally settled on a west wind at 8 - 12 mph. Mind you, the kite that I had rigged was designed for 12-18 mph winds (or something like that.) When I first went out, the wind was blowing 12 and gusting to the upper teens.
Almost Perfect!
I got in 2 good rides before I decided to rig my bigger kite. If you look at the graph below, the longest reach that I took was one of these 2 rides. I pumped up my 20 meter kite's struts and then the leading edge. I thumped the leading edge to see if it was hard enough. I decided it needed a couple of more pumps. I was wrong. 2 pumps and POOOSSSSSSSssshhhhhhhhhh The velcro that holds the end of the leading edge shut had let loose and in so doing it caused the bladder to pop.
DAMN! I said out loud.
I was rolling the kite back up when someone pulled up next to the truck and got my attention. It was a guy from eastern Ohio with whom I've had email correspondence about the Ice-Skateboard. We had a nice chat. Eventually I decided to give the smaller kite another go. Doug, the guy I had been talking to, assisted me with a launch (a couple of times) and eventually I got back out on the water.
For the next 3+ hours, I struggled to get enough power and speed in the kite to get me on plane. Lots of little jogs and lots of walking back up-wind on the beach - also known as "The Walk of Shame."

By 2pm, I was beat. Four hours of fighting the wind, the kite and the water was enough for one day. When it was all said and done, I had 7.5 miles worth of play. I assume that just less than 1/2 of that is acually riding. So, all-in-all... not a bad day.
I'm sure going to sleep like a baby tonight! |

For the geek squad
I have a new motherboard with 1 Gig of memory. Reinstalled windows and everything is going great except I get this message. "Spooler sub assy ap has encountered a problem and needs to close". Ihave sent an error report on it but no answer from MS as yet.
Is there a work around for this and what does the spooler sub assy ap do for the compter? Reply |
BizB Sun May 21 06:33:37 PM Heh... that was just 3 of the 12-or-so people that were rigging up and heading out. There was a lot more activity behind me. The kiter in the video was riding a 9 sq. meter kite. My smallest kite is a 14 meter. And, while I'm heavier than he, I couldn't keep a 14 meter in control in those winds. Wednesday, my replacement 9-meter kite should get here.
BBCK and I took a cycle-ride to watch everyone playing in the wind. Reply |
Betty Boop Sun May 21 05:55:29 PM p.s. - the pics from today show a lot of activity on those beaches. Great to see. Reply |
Betty Boop Sun May 21 05:54:53 PM way to go, you old hard head. Too bad she didn't have a Ringo in mind - how would you have dealt with that? But then she didn't have a big brother egging her on in this endeavour did she? Or am I just an old softie? Reply |

sopops Sun May 21 01:23:23 PM Warning From Pakistan
This morning, from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Migration, Mohammed Omar, warned the United States that if military action against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities will cut off America's supply of convenience store managers. And if this action does not yield sufficient results! , cab drivers will be next, followed by Dell customer service reps.&nb sp;
It's getting ugly. Reply |
